Hi there, I have an A&E band 6 interview coming up in which I am expected to give a 5 minute presentation. The title is 'as a junior sister/charge nurse, how would you facilitate effective patient flow whilst preserving safety in the department.' Any advise on how to structure this would be greatly received.

Hi Tads, I suppose the first thing to do would be to identify where the flow can be interrupted and which of those problems can lead to situations that affect patient safety.
Examples might be a seriously ill patient or patients that tie up staff and leave a patient that should be seen without attention. Dedicated triage helps to prevent this issue as well as having extra staff resources to draw on if required. Communication with the multidisciplinary team is a vital aspect. As well as having knowledge of the skill levels of your staff and the resources that are available - like beds, diagnostic imaging services, support from management. Nurses in A&E can be in a position of having greater knowledge in specific aspects of care than the doctors they are working with so being able to give appropriate advise and guidance to doctors early in their rotation. Know when to ask for help. Understand the hospital policy for critical patient numbers passing into A&E. Development of own skills to be able to recognise when situations may deteriorate. Learning and passing on skills from/to fellow nurses. Also resource management - avoid tying up multiple nurses with patients off the unit at the same time i.e. diagnostic imaging and patient transfers to wards. I hope some of this was helpful. Let us know how you get on. Good luck! Nigel |
